<br />
But there is no silver bullet.<br />
<br />
No single product can magically take you from beginner to awesome painter. No matter how much advertised or praised (I´m looking at you #ContrastPaints and #Airbrush), no product can spare you the frustration of failed attempts and abortive painting sessions, where you give up after trying in vain to reproduce the results of highly experienced painters (most often professionals) with your newly acquired product.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you never bought a hobby product because someone was praising it, if you have never been at least a bit disappointed in a purchase, you can stop reading here - this article is not for you.<br />
<br />
<br />
But if you are like me, did that and find it hard to tread the line between hoarding products you´ll never use, follow me into the discussion of why there cannot be a singular magic product, why every tool you acquire will require you to learn and improve again and how that can be a good thing after all.<br />
<br />
So let´s dive into it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<u><b>The Magic Bullet</b></u><br />
<br />
The much hyped contrast paints are just one of the more staggering examples of how producers market their product as the magic bullet that will turn you into a professional painter with the click of a "buy now"-button.<br />
<br />
There have been similar hypes before, the other prominent example I remember is airbrushing for miniature wargaming.<br />
<br />
These are not always triggered by greedy producers and they don´t even have to be a widespread phenomenon as in the Contrast Paint hype. Whenever I feel the urge to purchase a product because someone else is showing fantastic results using it, I could be in for a disappointment when buying it.<br />
<br />
I buy it, I try it - and it just doesn´t work. It doesn´t produce the same fantastical results!<br />
Why is that?<br />
<br />
Well, the answer is simple - I saw the results of a highly skilled artisan. By buying the same tools, I set myself up for success, but the most essential component is still missing - the skill and the experience (at least with that particular product and its properties).<br />
<br />
But how did I end up there?<br />
<u><br /></u>
<u><b>Why do we assume it is the product that does the magic?</b></u><br />
<br />
Somehow, along the way, I assumed that the product does the magic, when it is in fact the artisan.<br />
<br />
It is a bit like buying a Formula 1-Racing Car and assuming that I am now a professional driver able to win the Grand Prix, when I am barely a dangerous fool.<br />
Framed like that, it seems pretty idiotic.<br />
<br />
So how did I fall into that trap?<br />
<br />
I don´t have a definitive answer, but my hunch says: Because it is easier than admitting to myself that such shortcuts don´t exist and that only experience and training can gain me the required skills, maybe even with the tools I already have.<br />
<br />
The exitement of "let me try to perfect my techniques and skills with the products I already own" is far lower than "let my buy something new". <br />
<br />
It´s also a low risk endevour - we are not talking about ruinous sums to try a few jars of paint, a new brush or even an airbrush setup. These will rarely bankrupt me and the risks of something going terribly wrong are quasi nonexistent (contrary to the racing car analogy, which is fraught with obvious danger). <br />
<br />
<br />
<u><b>So - how to find a good balance with new products?</b></u><br />
<br />
If you are anything like me, you will have acquired a few products that weren´t worth it in hindsight.<br />
<br />
My list of shame includes:<br />
<ul>
<li>An expensive airbrush when I already had one that was perfectly suited for the job</li>
<li>Several jars of putty when I already had enough to work with (they just were another color)</li>
<li>A lot of colors and paint lines that I don´t actually use anymore </li>
<li>A set of washes when I already had better washes available </li>
<li>An electric tool </li>
</ul>
However, I also made quite a few purchases that were absolutely worth it and have significantly enhanced my results, <b><u>after I took my time to get to know the material or tool.</u></b><br />
<br />
In more than one instance, I was disappointed at my first attempt to work with the new material just to experience a full turnaround into excitement and awe at the possibilities that opened up as I got to know it better.<br />
<br />
<u>And actually that applies to the majority of the hobby products I use! </u><br />
<br />
Granted, I am not the type of person to jump headlong into any new product or trend - I am naturally reluctant to spend money, even more so after the mistakes I made in the past. But I still try new stuff from time to time - and will continue to do so.<br />
<br />
But before I go into a purchasing spree, I ask myself - what do I expect from the new product?<br />
What product do I already have that has similar properties I could use?<br />
If the new product does something I can already do - does it speed up my process or the quality of the result (and how so?)?<br />
<br />
I don´t want to be stuck in a situation where I have the same product all over again with different brands labeled on it. I don´t want to face the regret of all the money I threw in to find out that I´m actually not happy with the product because my expectations were all wrong.<br />
<br />
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true">Also - too many options will inevitably overwhelm you (if not financially, very likely psychologically) and limit your creativity. Too much freedom and choice is bad for your creativity.</span></span><br />
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true">Real creativity comes from restricting your options and adapting to these restrictions. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true">If you need to sift through hundrets of colors to buy the right shade for your project, you´re probably not working at peak performance. Maybe it is time to push yourself to new levels and learn to mix that shade from a limited palette? </span></span><br />
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true"><br /></span></span>
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true"><br /></span></span>
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true"></span></span><u><b> Keep Experimenting!</b></u><br />
<br />
However - don´t be deterred to try new products that your idols are using - they usually have good reasons for it! Just be prepared for the learning curve and manage your expectations.<br />
Manage these experiments like venture capital funds - whenever possible, spend small sums. Don´t buy the entire paint line if you didn´t try the range before. Why not start with 3-5 commonly used colors? You can expand from there if you like it! If not, the loss is not too painful.<br />
<br />
Remeber: <br />
Buying that product will not bring you everlasting joy and happiness.<br />
It will open up new possibilities.<br />
<br />
It will add another tool into your toolbox.<br />
But like every tool, the skills of the user are the most important factor in the equation.<br />
You don´t buy a hammer and expect to be a master carpenter.<br />
You don´t buy a piano and expect to be a award winning musician.<br />
<br />
So don´t buy hobby supplies and expect to be a pro painter. <br />
<br />
Build your skills - <span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true">new materials are great to keep you engaged and for opening up new horizons</span></span><br />
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true">But sometimes, less is more.</span></span><br />
<span data-offset-key="f1k8n-0-0"><span data-text="true">Choose intentionally. </span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
After a long time of preparation and translation, the full ruleset for Code Red is now available in english.<br />
<br />
You can download it at my website at <a href="https://www.enfilade-figures.com/Codered" target="_blank">https://www.enfilade-figures.com/Codered</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Code Red is a standalone ruleset for modern wargaming designed to recreate real and hypothetical conflicts after 1945.<br />
<br />
These rules have started out as a set of Houserules for a popular
Modern Wargaming ruleset to address some of its shortcomings, but have
evolved into a unique and distinct set of rules<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7glDNjtiqUhtO-QhHXe3tt-ICG7sUF2QShXHB23DWiUvK-bEpm399NduXpt6Cv0k6XJZFNIL-qT8HzxrbOC1yrUj8LxWfMKq540midUG1xgpn4M0tG_KtSBWiyoZBcCUoa3nGbS92G4k/s1600/CashCows1991.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="447" data-original-width="704" height="203" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7glDNjtiqUhtO-QhHXe3tt-ICG7sUF2QShXHB23DWiUvK-bEpm399NduXpt6Cv0k6XJZFNIL-qT8HzxrbOC1yrUj8LxWfMKq540midUG1xgpn4M0tG_KtSBWiyoZBcCUoa3nGbS92G4k/s320/CashCows1991.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The core rules are fully playable. It is designated as a "Beta" release as the rules for scenario generation and list building are not yet complete and far from balanced.<br />
I have to admit that my original scope was a bit too ambitious.<br />
<br />
However, if you like designing your own scenarios, you will have great fun with these rules - they have been tested and refined to a point where I am very satisfied with the result.<br />

Well, it almost was...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcxd8w2IZx6JNhjqUHFHWe3BSqbxv-CB0caoFs-8MajhKqmlhHtHvwSmuFcJ_eRqn51yzUHLGGczF5UnShNILbmrOqcfYm4DX6UQ1ad6nPMDcA-khIRvx8PC_a57fPM3ViLVsDgN-VSwU/s1600/Tomb+King01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="471" data-original-width="500" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcxd8w2IZx6JNhjqUHFHWe3BSqbxv-CB0caoFs-8MajhKqmlhHtHvwSmuFcJ_eRqn51yzUHLGGczF5UnShNILbmrOqcfYm4DX6UQ1ad6nPMDcA-khIRvx8PC_a57fPM3ViLVsDgN-VSwU/s320/Tomb+King01.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Time to resurrect it with the power of necromancy! <br />
<br />
Seems like I neglected my blog pretty badly throughout the last year and a half. Time to fix this. <br />
I haven´t been idle in 2019 and early 2020 - in fact, I painted and sculpted a lot of new stuff, just did not post it anywhere.<br />
<br />
I´ve been very focused on improving my productivity, so much so that I did not take the time to document the results online. But I like the ability to look back on my blog and see what I´ve done and how my skills develop over time. Looking back is a healthy reminder that everything starts small and develops over time into what you see these days.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcdLg8MFixl1cCf1VzQaYDfVy0h0EGZMeddvKQlHEZZPyODcqJddLgWF4wIVwvLPaehCC_X9M1SupfbYnXve5wj3pbPwyTgfUrmOnc4jB9-yQKP_qHWIM_7uEZoMPEx5wS-0AQxuiPQV8/s1600/IMG_4379+-+Tiny+Tanks+%2528PicoArmor%2529.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="637" data-original-width="1600" height="127" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcdLg8MFixl1cCf1VzQaYDfVy0h0EGZMeddvKQlHEZZPyODcqJddLgWF4wIVwvLPaehCC_X9M1SupfbYnXve5wj3pbPwyTgfUrmOnc4jB9-yQKP_qHWIM_7uEZoMPEx5wS-0AQxuiPQV8/s320/IMG_4379+-+Tiny+Tanks+%2528PicoArmor%2529.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For 2019 I made a pledge to paint more miniatures. Long story short: <br />
I showed my best friend in 2018 that new years resolutions do indeed work if you make them specific and measurable - and he achieved and exceeded what he planned to do.<br />
On New years eve, as it was time to find new resolutions and goals for 2019, he asked me what my resolution for the new year was, and so I commited to painting more minis and watching less videos on streaming platforms.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisuJDnw3YD7BHQqlCqCG4OlN0LMBODNcEpGGOr-2kBCl7QRhgg9a9YFeBlZ-sgIh0jeuyhCaeCuuw7NMNwJEZACWSBBXSH0F896m-qp-4EAZCaljGXAO_nDSlohUSXHu-7w1EEP_Batsg/s1600/IMG_4188+-+WW1+Germans.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisuJDnw3YD7BHQqlCqCG4OlN0LMBODNcEpGGOr-2kBCl7QRhgg9a9YFeBlZ-sgIh0jeuyhCaeCuuw7NMNwJEZACWSBBXSH0F896m-qp-4EAZCaljGXAO_nDSlohUSXHu-7w1EEP_Batsg/s320/IMG_4188+-+WW1+Germans.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And so I painted or sculpted 401 miniatures (20mm+) or bases (15mm or smaller) that I did not present to you.On some of them I cut corners, some of them I painted to a very high standard.<br />
<br />
I´ll try to update you on these achievements over the coming weeks.<br />
Stay tuned!<br />

<br />
Hard to believe, but four years ago I opened the <a href="https://enfilade-figures.com/" target="_blank">webshop</a> and started selling my figures to a wider audience.<br />
<br />
Since the, the ranges and available sets have grown manifold, thanks to the continued support of everyone who bought miniatures, sent ideas or supported me in any other way.<br />
<br />
This sale is my way to say thank you to all of you who like my figures - get them now for a much reduced price while our stock lasts.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
A few weeks ago I painted this chap to fill my saturday afternoon. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I didn´t want to use the typical red Khorne color scheme, but for the longest time didn´t have an idea. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
In the end I decided to use the faces on the armor to make things more interesting and give the miniature a theme: A human possessed by demons bound to the suit of armor he wears.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As such, the demon faces on the armor needed to look like they come alive while still appearing as part of the suit.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All in all, an interesting and fun challenge to paint this figure! </div>

This Portugese Infantry unit was waiting on my workbench for a long time.<br />
After more than 1,5 years I picked them up yesterday and painted them to a finish this morning.<br />
<br />
If you want your own, they are available in my webshop - just hit one of the pictures, they are linked to the right spot. <br />

Again, I mixed these with some converted Totentanz Miniatures and miniatures I sculpted myself. The result is nice, you can hardly tell which is which: <br />

<br />
A lot of progress has been made on my Muskovites that I haven´t bothered posting - it is now high time to get back on track with these photos.<br />
<br />
The first major step forward was the discovery of Fighting 15s Medieval Tannenberg Range. As I spotted the Lithuanian Boyars, I knew I could use them as Russians with almost no conversion effort. Here they are, dressed up as my Skirmish Sotnia: <br />

<br />
In November, I went to Crisis and had my first eye to eye contact with the original Fire and Sword miniatures. I always hated them from the pictures I had seen online, but on personal inspection, they didn´t look that bad after all. Wargamer.pl needs to amp up their product presentation on these, the pictures online are horrible compared to the real deal. While they are not amazing - certainly not as good as Totentanz miniatures - they are good enough and certainly better than expected.<br />
<br />
I mixed them up with the Fighting 15s Boyars and created a few more bases of regular Boyars.<br />
I also ended up mounting most of the Wargamer miniatures on AB horses, which are way better than the original pieces. <br />

<br />
After a devastating game using a Swedish Regimental Gun (proxied during the game by some half-painted and scratch-built Russian piece) in a village defense scenario - in which the regimental gun devastated three units all on its own - I decided that Artillery pieces would certainly see more action in the future and painted up all three bases I had got for christmas.<br />
<br />
These are the By Fire and Sword (Wargamer.pl) originals. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During the same game, the Swedes had to hire some Russian Mercenary musketeers as they were unable to field enough bases on their own. So, another base was made and as I was short on musketeers and didn´t want to order a whole batch just for another base, I sculpted two of my own.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also made some swedish casualties - I had a lot of Russian casualties, but none of Swedish variety</div>

<br />
<br />
For our African Wargamers, we now have Machete wielding African Insurgents, up to nothing good... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
In Afghanistan, heavy fighting has taken its toll, so we need some casualties to display this bitter reality on your wargaming table...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And - maybe a bit untimely regarding current events - a new Set of Women Militia is available. This new set features support weapons: <br />

The shop has also been properly re-stocked with other sets - however, due to a wrongly labeled mould our Portugese with AR10 set will not be available for a little while. We found the mistake, corrected it, but now they still need to be produced and sent here :)<br />

Well, as usual when this happens, things have been going on behind the scenes but I didn´t feel much of an urge to take pictures, process them and put them online.<br />
<br />
Still not feeling much like it, but at least I managed to take some shots of the various projects I have been or am working on right now.<br />
<br />
Last week I finished these river pieces. I´ve long wanted to add some rivers to my terrain selection and finally pushed the project through after gathering some motivation and inspiration over the christmas holidays<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCrn9a87z8za-iW3UEPl4jUoZ9v0iTFNNVL0nmsicQjWD6acai2klbU7UwOSeQ-p_vIBeeoDAlaOzLdXuIlNGpVyvIgKVJR5JgZ827vQ7T101r3O1jTc9minV7zdeP876n84d9vEXGrJI/s1600/River1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="567" data-original-width="800" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCrn9a87z8za-iW3UEPl4jUoZ9v0iTFNNVL0nmsicQjWD6acai2klbU7UwOSeQ-p_vIBeeoDAlaOzLdXuIlNGpVyvIgKVJR5JgZ827vQ7T101r3O1jTc9minV7zdeP876n84d9vEXGrJI/s640/River1.JPG" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also worked quite a bit on Code Red (my Modern Warfare Ruleset) in the first two weeks of January. One addition to the Rules was stats for MRAPs for the Americans and Brits. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During the work on the rules I felt the urge to add an MRAP to my collection. There are some kits out there, and I might get one at some point, but I didn´t feel like spending money. In the spur of the moment I remembered how other people achieve great results by scratchbuilding and started chipping away at some foam and plasticard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a few days, here we are with the scratchbuilt MRAP chassis. The CROWs is magnetized and can rotate. Right now I´m working on the wheels which are a bit of a challenge - too big, too small or too irregular and they start looking ugly.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyKHjYN81yyHeOSOkJWkcXEFSlZ8AD0ORp3ULsefHk4qfPwUfFBr-e-ADSM80O3soqkgscpbE5yxdqgH-NDrENYMPeGe7hNB_eBOWb7zCGk_ccnjZZhY0Jfy688hhrUnrTJBvsGUBS0Ns/s1600/MRAP+WIP.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="623" data-original-width="800" height="311" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyKHjYN81yyHeOSOkJWkcXEFSlZ8AD0ORp3ULsefHk4qfPwUfFBr-e-ADSM80O3soqkgscpbE5yxdqgH-NDrENYMPeGe7hNB_eBOWb7zCGk_ccnjZZhY0Jfy688hhrUnrTJBvsGUBS0Ns/s400/MRAP+WIP.JPG" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the sculpting front, I started another set of Special Forces - these will be a Team in CQB-poses, one Pointman with a pistol (or out of ammo switching to his sidearm - you decide), a breacher with a Shotgun - and not yet started, an operator preparing a grenade or flashbang before the assault. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope you enjoyed the small insight into my WIP stuff. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished a lot more stuff in December that I did not take pictures of. When my blogging motivation returns, I shall take some photos and put them up here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until then, happy wargaming!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUJSjwZ83-Uh-HOOJ8-XBj3PPzosnMyJQHiNhtVP_arIUoSwrQLG3oOsznUKW6jxk-84t4NVEYsD9FSoSDPldrG_T_Sm8w-X6lz-sLQaG2MQjSf2po0v036RfAAEUI1a_o__deURM0YVU/s1600/Wall.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1072" data-original-width="1600" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUJSjwZ83-Uh-HOOJ8-XBj3PPzosnMyJQHiNhtVP_arIUoSwrQLG3oOsznUKW6jxk-84t4NVEYsD9FSoSDPldrG_T_Sm8w-X6lz-sLQaG2MQjSf2po0v036RfAAEUI1a_o__deURM0YVU/s640/Wall.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I had a lot of different wall sections for Middle Eastern Compounds that I made over the years -many different sizes, shapes and colors. Some mounted on tiles - my<a href="https://riflesandmuskets.blogspot.de/2015/02/afghan-village-part-4.html" target="_blank"> Afghan Village compounds</a> for example - some single pieces.<br />
<br />
<br />
I rarely used the village tiles. They turned out to be too inflexible and harder to transport and set up than necessary. All the different walls, compounds and colors didn´t really fit and they are not a good match with my new desert terrain mat.<br />
<br />
So last week I butchered all the different walls and standardized them.<br />
<br />
Work began by dismantling the wall sections, removing them from their bases. Most were on cardboard bases that had warped consirably due to painting, turning them into unattractive pieces.<br />
I got rid of all the cardboard, slashed up the tiles into compounds and wall sections and began cutting PVA-bases. The picture below shows how many walls were involved: <br />

<br />
Work was split over several days. At one point I had to take a break because I had a blister forming on my index finger from cutting the PVA. Fortunately I stopped soon enough and was able to continue working the next day when the irritation had gone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrmyWu7sqPCCXAglS7WuAtQbJg0dS8pMynfRuPvpCiHwJXAMY4qgUx95F77ffbAjePc3xNHQwk_zbTDdpmuvmx6x2rNDBzHbKjAS8DXQgQCRgaT5CcCcdSbOUaH8rPvQ-u7lPRgkNonbo/s1600/Wall02.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="628" data-original-width="800" height="502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrmyWu7sqPCCXAglS7WuAtQbJg0dS8pMynfRuPvpCiHwJXAMY4qgUx95F77ffbAjePc3xNHQwk_zbTDdpmuvmx6x2rNDBzHbKjAS8DXQgQCRgaT5CcCcdSbOUaH8rPvQ-u7lPRgkNonbo/s640/Wall02.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After all the bases were prepared, I started mounting them. At that point, I had standardized their size, but you can still see the very different colors - Most of the walls were kept raw white and not even painted. Shame on my past self ;) Terrain was never my strong suit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho_c0ky4__wRz4EFtMLhcXF5JRmS_tBRf1arbC2g5iNIZfmU4Pm7cVsuuf1CZ3d2syjMNitW98Kiq5opb4jsU2RQX4XCN4v_bXWu7MnyaUxQYbkGFNpNKUXwvxXg3MNe3PSUXE8pBDkfA/s1600/Wall03.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="474" data-original-width="800" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho_c0ky4__wRz4EFtMLhcXF5JRmS_tBRf1arbC2g5iNIZfmU4Pm7cVsuuf1CZ3d2syjMNitW98Kiq5opb4jsU2RQX4XCN4v_bXWu7MnyaUxQYbkGFNpNKUXwvxXg3MNe3PSUXE8pBDkfA/s640/Wall03.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After gluing, sanding and priming the pieces, I commenced painting and treated the wall sections with the airbrush. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyke7dUJ0JCFNkJIMTntzYv9y4-ODlFXZnXYZ8i2parD41lfW_ZeXY-aGJ6XgGJ2zVJ22Xx7p5OZDpbPh4ZES1geh6hHiuxWJ7LQpxOC177hBcHdlq2Gw0O7yyphyphenhyphenvxFrfboXBXyjx79U/s1600/Wall05.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="513" data-original-width="800" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyke7dUJ0JCFNkJIMTntzYv9y4-ODlFXZnXYZ8i2parD41lfW_ZeXY-aGJ6XgGJ2zVJ22Xx7p5OZDpbPh4ZES1geh6hHiuxWJ7LQpxOC177hBcHdlq2Gw0O7yyphyphenhyphenvxFrfboXBXyjx79U/s640/Wall05.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After everything had dried, the sand received some treatment with drybrushing and washes. Finally, I added some flock and let all of it dry. After a few hours of work, I had transformed all the ugly pieces to a new standard: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbJP6ks2BW-ebLomsDzcG8oz2jQJgzDssxXXTdTLDFP_mJJYKlwHvAujKNYKG_NeNMUYvDObr_UdlKpNuwE9XRl_fiTJ4aPFSZW8UiX0cagDR4suGOlNrp6a5sNTzXe8_0kDH8ifFDOKg/s1600/Wall06.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="515" data-original-width="800" height="412" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbJP6ks2BW-ebLomsDzcG8oz2jQJgzDssxXXTdTLDFP_mJJYKlwHvAujKNYKG_NeNMUYvDObr_UdlKpNuwE9XRl_fiTJ4aPFSZW8UiX0cagDR4suGOlNrp6a5sNTzXe8_0kDH8ifFDOKg/s640/Wall06.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Ironically as I looked for space to store them neatly, I discovered more wall sections that I had missed on the first search. But I´m done with walls for the near future, they´ll either follow at a later point or find their way right into the bin.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzFXtHkUrM-XXroaS25TvN1TDKvzby1HD8JXVjrU0QIzBVvxH8_ugfempBPE437EqjoB9to0iYzTS2ZAcZLjI4_FoJIujzr3fG0OR4FGJVNXwYTJfnM7ZPeMQuL6-NzMzK_UOk8vNvod4/s1600/Blocking+Detachment+Cover+Picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="316" data-original-width="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzFXtHkUrM-XXroaS25TvN1TDKvzby1HD8JXVjrU0QIzBVvxH8_ugfempBPE437EqjoB9to0iYzTS2ZAcZLjI4_FoJIujzr3fG0OR4FGJVNXwYTJfnM7ZPeMQuL6-NzMzK_UOk8vNvod4/s1600/Blocking+Detachment+Cover+Picture.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
After this rather one-sided game, we decided to play the game in reversed roles. I would take over Opfor and have my friend attack.<br />
<br />
I have to admit I was a bit anxious - after all, I had to prove that the forces and setup were balanced and that the shortcoming of both sides could be overcome.... <br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
To be fair, I had a bit of... premonition... on the challenges of defense from the first game, but so had my friend with the attacking force. <br />
<br />
<br />
After changing sides, I analysed potential improvements on the defenders deployment.<br />
I chose to deploy further back.<br />
<br />
This granted me the advantage of hard cover over just soft cover and would make my troops harder t kill. I also deployed the vehicles further back to employ them on my terms against the superior Bradley.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6UJiSx6O170HWlK5hB-r6R14X1h2qal7tbTr4gPIK1R36Ve6Yu2juqrUasHtUSUGY7ZVttFvEdMVyu4A1DMEed3HyVzcMvhOqnL69nhbM04Ctf6tNkmMvVGtkZ6qfQvF-zwAAEaSEjxc/s1600/01+-+CR2+-+Turn+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="582" data-original-width="900" height="411" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6UJiSx6O170HWlK5hB-r6R14X1h2qal7tbTr4gPIK1R36Ve6Yu2juqrUasHtUSUGY7ZVttFvEdMVyu4A1DMEed3HyVzcMvhOqnL69nhbM04Ctf6tNkmMvVGtkZ6qfQvF-zwAAEaSEjxc/s640/01+-+CR2+-+Turn+1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
My friend deployed heavily on the left side, with one fireteam mounted on the Bradley for a potentially quick attack. He deployed a single fireteam on the right.<br />
<br />
With the first few actions we moved some troops around to no major effect. I brought by BTR into position to soften up the infantry fireteam in the centre (below the Bradley) without getting shot by the US IFV.<br />
<br />
I also moved my troops further into the rocks on my left (US right) to contest any advance into my flank.<br />
<br />
Most importantly however, I detached an AT group from my squad in the centre, had it advance and shoot on the Bradley. At first, to no effect, as the initial shot missed... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8juVz49xkP0RkKQ6ZYv-Y34ec4wECjpOEwl2jYvzlPl2Qy1guoEXoAUqFp0nT_6iH9LBY9Euewb6GMUZA9nj3wQIzbMzs_g5JZ3oI54fVYZXyiPnq79gPrSl0DzkIr2VJ9YDz7pbRTXY/s1600/01+-+CR2+-+Turn+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="610" data-original-width="900" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8juVz49xkP0RkKQ6ZYv-Y34ec4wECjpOEwl2jYvzlPl2Qy1guoEXoAUqFp0nT_6iH9LBY9Euewb6GMUZA9nj3wQIzbMzs_g5JZ3oI54fVYZXyiPnq79gPrSl0DzkIr2VJ9YDz7pbRTXY/s640/01+-+CR2+-+Turn+2.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The US counter fire was punishing to the units morale, but so far I suffered no losses.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The game came to a quick closure as the second shot hit despite my unit being rattled by morale effects. The Bradley went up in flames and with it the only weapon system available to the US forces that could effectively engage my BTRs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU9mgWlu7wIlk4mubWEHJxiisSa9maMBShUx_GWq3ai4mPIaiElpuvqI75fTIgcWM_n5jgM5IaBBHtDD1vUsVPE_x6Ma278uXMK8gQNyq1eC9d-zVIYTR5XrmBsOs-b9J7hyMxaDcU71Q/s1600/01+-+CR2+-+Turn+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="574" data-original-width="900" height="408" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU9mgWlu7wIlk4mubWEHJxiisSa9maMBShUx_GWq3ai4mPIaiElpuvqI75fTIgcWM_n5jgM5IaBBHtDD1vUsVPE_x6Ma278uXMK8gQNyq1eC9d-zVIYTR5XrmBsOs-b9J7hyMxaDcU71Q/s640/01+-+CR2+-+Turn+3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In this situation of desparation, we uncovered why it is never good to base a game mechanic that determines the winner of the scenario on rolling dice - however unlikely!<br />
<br />
Fed up with the situation, my friend decided that rolling 6 successes on 6 dice was his best choice and he of course made the roll. <br />
<br />
We shook hands, fully aware that the official victory was for Opfor - anything else is imperialist propaganda - and decided to change that silly rule to a deterministic check.<br />
<br />
<br />
As you can see, the first game was not predetermined to be a clear victory for the US Forces - with a different deployment and by using troops in a different way combined with a bit of luck Opfor was able to strike a blow against the attacker that he had difficulty to recover from.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
We didn´t take pictures on the third game - after some tweaks to armored combat we had a violent engagement between Western-Style Cold War Forces of Defendaria holding out against the Soviet-Style attackers of Aggresistan. Many vehicles blew up and it was a close and fun game :) <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This report covers the first of three playtest games. The games were quickly thrown together, without much thought about balance, dramatic scenarios or somesuch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We threw a US Mechanized Formation against a Russian-Style Force using my Soviet Cold War models. Somewhere in the Desert, a US Intervention force was pushing along a valley to reach a strategic refinery that had to be defended by the local authorities. Let´s call our Russians OPFOR for the remainder of this report.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We wanted to test Vehicles some more, so both factions got vehicles. Unfortunately I forgot to give the Americans some spare AT weapons on their infantry squads - it turned out to be an interesting tactical challenge to work with what you got. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
OPFOR had to defend three obstacles barring the way to the refinery while preventing their force from breaking. We were testing a mechanic for force motivation that governs the end of the scenario.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
US Forces are in blue on the left - USA deployed two Infantry Squads placed along the entire frontline. Their Bradley was left in reserve to minimize risk of sudden RPG fire. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
OPFOR deployed in a forward defence towards the centre of the table. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first turn saw some exchange of fire without much movement. Looks unspectacular on the pictures, but you might notice the two yellow markers on the OPFOR unit in the centre. These are morale chits inflicted by enemy fire. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the first exchanges of fire the OPFOR infantry unit was almost suppressed while US combat effectiveness remained high - also aided by the fact that the US Force fielded more leaders and was able to rally troops more easily. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But mostly the result was due to bad dice on the OPFOR side. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the next turn, the Opfor unit was suppressed for good. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the enemy combat ineffective for now the Fireteam on the US right moved in to start the flanking maneuver that should finish the Opfor infantry group.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Bradley was now ordered to join the battle as the biggest threat (RPG fire from the infantry) was neutralized for the time being. The Bradley began it´s duel with the Opfor BTR-70.</div>

The Bradley is the superior vehicle and unlikely to get mission killed by the BTRs, but there´s some lucky chance the HMG will find a weak spot and knock it out or drive it back. </div>
<br />
<br />
The second Opfor infantry unit advanced as well to get involved in the fight, but it had to cross a field first to establish Line of Sight to the US troops. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The US unit on the right moves into the field to pour flanking fire onto the Opfor unit. Unfortunately they get caught pants down by the BTR rotating its turret and interrupting them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Luckily only one man down.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second BTR trades fire with the Bradley and damages the Optics due to a critical hit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO8AH9fK_o-BvNufNq9OB0talcvLinBuMM9K7U4svwtWUCJOa8_LItgEOcVmeEHVtVzWPj2m6KkdBJjd2BPNu5EiMj6zahtmP72js7CXjTleajm02oN7PXI1aYX5fkHh40AcP16rifOfg/s1600/01+-+CR1+-+Turn+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="595" data-original-width="900" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO8AH9fK_o-BvNufNq9OB0talcvLinBuMM9K7U4svwtWUCJOa8_LItgEOcVmeEHVtVzWPj2m6KkdBJjd2BPNu5EiMj6zahtmP72js7CXjTleajm02oN7PXI1aYX5fkHh40AcP16rifOfg/s640/01+-+CR1+-+Turn+5.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At that point, we got carried away with fighting and didn´t take many pictures.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below you see the final shot of the game. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The flanking US Infantry group has been suffering from adverse Morale effects from the BTR pouring fire on its position. The second fireteam is advancing to take over their role in assaulting the Opfor Infantry, which has by this point suffered catastrophic losses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At that point, the critical weakness of the US forces shows: No AT weapons means the Bradley has to clear the vehicles - infantry cannot engage armored vehicles effectively. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fortunately, the Bradley finally aquires target and explodes the BTR. This pushes Opfor force motivation below the breaking point and ends the game. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyhGUUsEmEw2y3XXgraGkwnbljAz_ENBG2SYXIEaUhD_NqlWEi7WhcJZS-UYL6w2ckmzfALrFMy-9RDrpMoNsPaQp3RPcyBgMnBJHuLh3pucTVm6DXnw_oOnL36BhrYxBj1iLJ807kZ0g/s1600/01+-+CR1+-+Turn+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="604" data-original-width="900" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyhGUUsEmEw2y3XXgraGkwnbljAz_ENBG2SYXIEaUhD_NqlWEi7WhcJZS-UYL6w2ckmzfALrFMy-9RDrpMoNsPaQp3RPcyBgMnBJHuLh3pucTVm6DXnw_oOnL36BhrYxBj1iLJ807kZ0g/s640/01+-+CR1+-+Turn+6.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had some debate about the results.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Opfor suffered from bad rolls and early suppression of their units. None of the infantry unit ever fired with full effect, the battle was mostly fought by the BTRs - hence the result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We realised that my friend felt stuck with the infantry because he wasn´t aware that he could voluntarily retreat them to get them out of harms way - this comes at a cost, but might have yielded different results. Might. </div>
<br />
<br />
The game was very interesting to me as it brought some rought edges to light that need tweaking. I took a lot of notes on potential changes that are now being implemented.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We decided to play the game again in reversed roles but without making changes to force structure or rules yet - me playing Opfor and my friend US. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

In the Dark woods of the north, a duel between Lion and Eagle takes place as two scouting parties clash on their reconnaissance missions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A Muscovite Force led by the venerable Golova Rurik Borikov makes contact with a Swedish Detachment led by Malte Larsson. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Borikov has deployed a Group of Servant Cossacks on his right flank facing Swedish Dragoons while placing his cavalry in the centre and on the left flank. The Swedish Deployment mirrors the Muscovite troop placement as both sides seek to contest the broken ground with infantry while sending their cavalry along the clearings in the forest and onto the ploughed fields. </div>

Muscovite Skirmish Force (4 FSP):<br />
<ul>
<li>1x Golova (of significant family but inept) </li>
<li>2 Servant Cossacks Sotnias (6 Bases deployed as 1 Squadron)</li>
<li>3 Boyar Son Sotnias (deployed as 1 squadron of 4 bases and 1 sotnia delayed) </li>
<li>1 Skirmish Sotnia (3 Bases)</li>
</ul>
Swedish Skirmish Force (3 FSP):<br />
<ul>
<li>Colonel </li>
<li>2 Reiter Squadrons (2x2 Bases deployed separately)</li>
<li>1 Dragoon Company (3 Bases)</li>
</ul>
<br />
The battle commences as the two groups move towards each other.<br />
The Swedish are first to take position and dismount close to the broken ground, using thir superior range and firepower to inflict staggering losses to the Russian Cossacks at long range.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4TYdoxrCsM7zr8Pam2x-OIxtVE_qcP13v9G7KEYhyphenhyphen4sGkBo-D4zlXAukwM4S0pqmp2KeIBbU2iT236StSTXnD19znFv398_opzge6Co1o6NDnHYZCsBOEHkVMH7TNxrJrSkFOy0fQOfM/s1600/02+-+BFAS+Turn+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="702" data-original-width="900" height="498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4TYdoxrCsM7zr8Pam2x-OIxtVE_qcP13v9G7KEYhyphenhyphen4sGkBo-D4zlXAukwM4S0pqmp2KeIBbU2iT236StSTXnD19znFv398_opzge6Co1o6NDnHYZCsBOEHkVMH7TNxrJrSkFOy0fQOfM/s640/02+-+BFAS+Turn+1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
In the centre, a cavalry skirmish ensues as both sides close into melee. At this point, the swedish reiters have suffered minor losses from Muscovite Shooting.<br />
<br />
The infantry contiues to fight over the broken ground, the Swedish Dragoons continue to inflict heavy losses on the Servant Cossacks and seriously disrupt their formation.<br />
<br />
On his left flank the swedish commander orders the second reiter squadron to return to the centre, fearing that a collapse of his engaged Reiters might destabilize the center and endanger the dragoons. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
After a short melee, the Reiter squadron in the swedish center flees after suffering more losses. Their morale is broken and despite the valiant effort of Colonel Larsson the unit would not rally.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTVfaA9ohCRiiQJSABv7qCCL1fs12fiwNimNzU4gkXoHYQ2jAyksyIZTHxXTZhi0vs0942pJYCMJQjlbBofBOB8dSOLIO1KcdJXsCcEzNOzCC8wcneFtq8b-8_Xenx4myz5zrUcOxv3g/s1600/03+-+BFAS+Turn+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="900" height="606" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTVfaA9ohCRiiQJSABv7qCCL1fs12fiwNimNzU4gkXoHYQ2jAyksyIZTHxXTZhi0vs0942pJYCMJQjlbBofBOB8dSOLIO1KcdJXsCcEzNOzCC8wcneFtq8b-8_Xenx4myz5zrUcOxv3g/s640/03+-+BFAS+Turn+3.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The Muscovite Skirmish sotnia finds itself outmaneuvered after scouting their objective and turning to the center. They have exposed their flank to the swedish reiters returning to the center.<br />
<br />
Their formations collapses after being charged in the flank, forcing Golova Borikov to commit his Boyar sons to fight the reiters instead of focussing on the dragoons. <br />
<br />
The Swedish Dragoons are ordered forward in an attempt to dislodge the disorganized cossacks. Despite their lack of cohesion, the cossacks resist fiercly and repell the assault.<br />
The Dragoons withdraw and try to reorganize. <br />
<br />

<br />
Golova Borikov succeeds in rallying the fleeing Skirmish Sotnia and suddenly the daring Swedish Reiters are faced with an assault into two units. The Reiters still charge ahead into the Skirmish Sotnia but are soon flanked by the Boyar Sons. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a short melee, the reiters disengage, leaving Malte Larsson with no option but to order a general withdrawal. The Muscovites secure a tactical victory against the swedes, having scouted more objectives and only suffering minor losses. </div>

<br />
<br />
After almost three years of design and playtesting it is time to release the very first playable edition of Code Red to our fellow wargamers.<br />
<br />
Code Red is a standalone ruleset for modern wargaming designed to recreate real and hypothetical conflicts after 1945.<br />
<br />
These rules have started out as a set of Houserules for a popular
Modern Wargaming ruleset to address some of its shortcomings, but have
evolved into a unique and distinct set of rules with a special focus on:<br />
<ul>
<li>Command and Control and the role of leaders on the battlefield</li>
<li>Morale and Suppression and their effect on units</li>
<li>Tactical Depth and interesting decisions facing the player</li>
</ul>
The rules are designed to provide a level of tactical realism,
narrative quality, scaleability and simplicity that makes them easy to
learn but hard to master. We´ve been trying to master them for 3 years
now and we´re still not there ;)<br />
<br />
After more than 3 years of development and testing, we´re confident
to provide a challenging and fun game for those of you who want to dive
deeper into the logic of modern warfare.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As a first step on our way to the final release we´re making the simplified QuickStart rules available both in English and German. These documents condense the essential rules for your first experience of Code Red into less than 10 pages.<br />
<br />
Of course we had to cut some things from the 90 page full rule set, but we´re confident about the scope of the quickstart rules and we´re hoping they make you look forward to the full ruleset.<br />
<br />
We´re planning to release the German version of the full rules in late 2017 to early 2018.<br />
The english translation will follow later and I will make no promises as to when exactly.<br />
<br />
<br />
We´ve published the rules for free on my website - klicking the banner below will navigate you to the right place to download them for free: <br />

<ul>
<li>Move</li>
<li>Charge</li>
<li>Defend</li>
</ul>
Lacking these markers turned some of my first games into an ugly mess, as we had to improvise using paper slips to display our orders.<br />
<br />
Being a cheapo, I refuse buying expensive tin order markes when I can build them easily. After our latest game with paper markers I decided it was time to prepare some proper markers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQoHjgDg0qNvtneuqV-bpAQCnhetD4PpphItQ1DhYGxOa7tMXYCiEsw6uQ6aHrICYRectwPeQ-OCQZOnPdcFe-Vw-2ZHVywtllyBymEvNDB8gb-Fxh_CgqjJjMy1MZNzxrYbQ-xEVhXl8/s1600/Order+Markers.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="700" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQoHjgDg0qNvtneuqV-bpAQCnhetD4PpphItQ1DhYGxOa7tMXYCiEsw6uQ6aHrICYRectwPeQ-OCQZOnPdcFe-Vw-2ZHVywtllyBymEvNDB8gb-Fxh_CgqjJjMy1MZNzxrYbQ-xEVhXl8/s1600/Order+Markers.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
These are pretty simple if you know how they are made.<br />
The base are my usual synthetic cork pieces cut into slices - you might as well use metal, plastic or coins, doesn´t matter.<br />
The symbol on the marker is a slip of plasticard cut into triangles and rectangles, which I then used to build these simple symbols by gluing them onto my base. Then they got a treatment of oxide paste and a bit of gravel on the symbol-side before they went into painting.<br />
<br />
Done.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Of course orders aren´t the only thing I´ve been working on. I also completed the last base of Cavalry to add another 3 Boyar Son bases to my force for our game scheduled tomorrow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UtqQ1FhnEW32vAAvUipPlIHcoGRPYkZdGy0d_W7ph-aGtCnZ7WJqaTtuv4q25_7xGsqKiTBYOszlz7pn1V6LhQWIegz9jf7KTL5UDLcFpAubZQFXhumdO2RUk5flHEoUbV_0pzeI0_o/s1600/Boyar+Son+04.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="603" data-original-width="800" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7UtqQ1FhnEW32vAAvUipPlIHcoGRPYkZdGy0d_W7ph-aGtCnZ7WJqaTtuv4q25_7xGsqKiTBYOszlz7pn1V6LhQWIegz9jf7KTL5UDLcFpAubZQFXhumdO2RUk5flHEoUbV_0pzeI0_o/s640/Boyar+Son+04.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As these troops are not exactly high performers, I also prepared some casualty markers for my Muscovites. These were a bit more work than the orders, as I sculpted these from scratch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62XNJ7YeNitpHNiOhuXImTRxrkWGaF-SlyEZI_MEQeTmIN8HM1OqPmzb3ue0V-45U_XXO4KhNwJD7VVZPWLnhAgSyiTaxT0auwqxreP8j3bFLBrQOqOTkYndgptLLkL6YFd1W-L7Sdd0/s1600/Muscovite+Casualties.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="399" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62XNJ7YeNitpHNiOhuXImTRxrkWGaF-SlyEZI_MEQeTmIN8HM1OqPmzb3ue0V-45U_XXO4KhNwJD7VVZPWLnhAgSyiTaxT0auwqxreP8j3bFLBrQOqOTkYndgptLLkL6YFd1W-L7Sdd0/s1600/Muscovite+Casualties.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
I actually tried the Tony Barton tile technique (read more about it <a href="http://www.guildwargamers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=44586" target="_blank">here</a>) using oven-baking clay for some of them. For casualties that worked quite well - which prompted me to take the experiment one step further and try a full figure.<br />
<br />
Read more about how that went soon ;)<br />

As my terrain still sucks compared to the figures I have available, I recently invested a minor sum into extruded pvc-boards and started leveling up my terrain.<br />
<br />
After a lot of cutting, carving, gluing and flocking, my broken grund pieces are ready for the battlefield and will provide some nice scatter terrain. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEEz7AYOpxee_crzyFqW-puqMUsLQRy2eeUgtG-k4-_A-HFZMYdeU9YxiuiLW-C2pF92ivhEWfJ4xRa8Npp6Mrk8iFk3quv6N95vCwHOl-a8rU5ZmBkGFOJrXL0fSFMpjIsFDSeF1Naug/s1600/Terrain+-+Broken+Ground.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="550" data-original-width="800" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEEz7AYOpxee_crzyFqW-puqMUsLQRy2eeUgtG-k4-_A-HFZMYdeU9YxiuiLW-C2pF92ivhEWfJ4xRa8Npp6Mrk8iFk3quv6N95vCwHOl-a8rU5ZmBkGFOJrXL0fSFMpjIsFDSeF1Naug/s640/Terrain+-+Broken+Ground.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And here are some potential occupants of the Terrain: Some Servant Cossacks - a dismounted base and a horse holder base. Again, the AB Napoleonic Horses are doing a great job! I just added a saddle and boom:<br />
<br />

<br />
With my recent Fire and Sword adventure, I´ve decided to add a tiny Swedish Force - though I tried to cheat a little by making the Reiter units suitable both for Russian and Swedish Service.<br />
<br />
This way, I only had to paint a few bases of Dragoons/Musketeers and a Command Unit. For a Start, the Reiter squadrons would be dual-use for my Muskovites as well as Swedish Service.<br />
<br />
Here are the Dragoons: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMujkIrwziY1i6LW-2UFuYFOpjHHa9bVt632zPrTcarRFXHGG5tvpqFyRzZKRtSRGPgXQZW2dHxQUE2NhgfmvRCvXHTPxcueSLuiOLBXLPBTUqm3Q7T7L_iAXCdMDDQQfgxsCkt-dPVGg/s1600/Swedish+Dragoons+01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="498" data-original-width="700" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMujkIrwziY1i6LW-2UFuYFOpjHHa9bVt632zPrTcarRFXHGG5tvpqFyRzZKRtSRGPgXQZW2dHxQUE2NhgfmvRCvXHTPxcueSLuiOLBXLPBTUqm3Q7T7L_iAXCdMDDQQfgxsCkt-dPVGg/s1600/Swedish+Dragoons+01.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
The Swedish Commander - I have to work some more on th Banner, it´s a freehand design and needs a bit more shading and highlighting. I´m going to rework it as some point once the Command Unit has earned some renown.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ6gyzGVXRbMsZIhsjJ65Tl7cMHQxdaak_SYtVRtcv8crks_EsBFluZRc3z0KqgbkKiuyo3112gQfeWLv-32fmV-muEafmS8FIs99sNlWYvFf1VhIH6X_wPOdRKVuBh49Dy41HP6-Nd7A/s1600/Swedish+Command+01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="502" data-original-width="700" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ6gyzGVXRbMsZIhsjJ65Tl7cMHQxdaak_SYtVRtcv8crks_EsBFluZRc3z0KqgbkKiuyo3112gQfeWLv-32fmV-muEafmS8FIs99sNlWYvFf1VhIH6X_wPOdRKVuBh49Dy41HP6-Nd7A/s1600/Swedish+Command+01.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, two Bases of Reiters. I added some beards and painted the coats in colors that would be suitable for my Muskovite Force a well. The Swedes will get some dedicated units later, right now flexibility and economy is important as I am trying to paint them to a nice standard.<br />
<br />
