Private Protection Detail - Military Contractor Preview

As announced, the resculpting of old sets continues. After almost finishing the new Africans with Battle Rifles (photo turned out crappy so I didn´t upload it) I have reworked the Set containing the African Dictator / General and his protection detail.

Actually, the name is not really that fitting - you might call it VIP with Personal Protection as well.
So, here is the first foreign mercenary hired to protect my VIP:

As you can see, he is also suitable for other theatres and might even be doubling for a CIA operator or SpecOp Operator in light gear.

Very versatile figure, and I hope the set will be more sought after when the rework is done.

Old and New - Replacing Old Minis

Hey folks,

small update in between to show off some new sculpts.
These two are built to replace two very old and dissatisfactory models in one of my Insurgent sets:

I tried to keep the poses very similar to the originals, but I changed the arm on the RPG-gunner, hoping to improve castability without having his arm cut off.

Going into the remoulded set of INS-04, which has to be moved to a new mold anyway.
These include the original figures.
If you can find the models that are being replaced, you win nothing but will feel great ;P

French CE Pattern

Today I took some time to paint the first half of my new French Infantry Squad.
The chosen camo scheme was French Central Europe (CE) pattern painted with:
VJ Iraqi Sand
VJ Ivory
VJ Black Grey
VJ Dark Sea Grey
VJ Tan Yellow
VJ Dark Flesh
VJ Russian Uniform Green
VJ Light Brown
GW / Citadel Graveyard Earth  (you can also use VJ US Field Drab, pretty similar)
and a tiny drop of GW Agrax Earthshade and Reikland Fleshtone

Here´s the preliminary result so far:

I also took the pic to see the imperfections, which are sometimes very hard to spot on the mini - easier to see on the magnified picture. Might have to touch up the faces somewhat. :)

But so far so good I think.

Horny Girl...

Another recent paintjob I finished on a spare Daemonette of Slaanesh, slightly converted.

With this figure, I tried another color scheme using a lot of purple. The basic colors were layered in using my airbrush, followed up by careful layering of all the different colors.
Experimenting with Non Metallic Metal on both the staff and the armor was very interesting and a great learning experience.

I´m pretty happy with the result overall, but not with the photo.  The picture doesn´t really to the figure justice. Maybe I´ll get the opportunity to take better pics some day - until then, here she is:

Big Badboy

After a long period of silence I thought I might as well pop up here again with some recent work in progress.  Unfortunately I still have issues with my lighting situation indoors and the sun is not yet strong enough to work long evenings on the balcony. While the light is barely sufficient to get figures painted, I have a very hard time taking decent photos.

Anyway, I´ve started working on some more Fantasy models as I am in no mood for painting anything modern, be it vehicles or infantry. Instead, I wanted to improve my painting on some of the larger 28mm models I had in store. I also got a box of Putrid Blightkings from the big bad Sheriff of Nottingham.

Though I cringed at the price tag on first sight, I actually think the kit is not as expensive as it seems if you make full use of it.  Being proficient with sculpting I can use all the bits and pieces to create a lot more blightkings than the 5 that you are supposed to be building.

Before going to these lengths I started with the standard kits doing some minor conversion work by switching some weapons and heads on the minis to create my own version of nurgles servants.
I went on to build some nice scenic bases, untercoated everything with black and grey. Then I established some basic colors by airbrushing thin layers of green, orange, skin tones and blue.

After doing that on two of the more fleshy models, I picked up the regular brushes and started working back and forth with layers and glazes of tan, yellows and fleshtones for the highlights and reds, blues and greens for the shadows and middle tones.

And here we are with the current status of my first Blightking:

He´s actually not glued to the base yet, just loosely placed on it for future reference.
Another pic of the raw mini:

And his companions:

I´ll try to post some more updates as I progress with the work on these.

And maybe I´ll finally be able to take some good photos of the other work I´ve been doing. Fingers crossed ;)

Genoese Galleys

Hi again,

easter holidays are over and here´s some cool new stuff!
I got inspired by a fellow german wargamer when looking over his project log over on another forum I frequently visit. He had been scratch-building galleys out of thin air and achieved some very decent results...

Being a long time fan of renaissance galleys and only lacking the right models (most are too big for my taste, and almost all too expensive for a sideproject) to give serious consideration to starting a small fleet, his work fell on fertile ground.

As I returned home yesterday, I decided to give this method a try, did some very quick and rought research and calculated how large my ships should be to suit my taste. I ended up with a scale of 1:1000, which turns a historical ship of about 40-50m  into a nice and tiny 4-5cm Ship.

Then, I got my sheet of plasticard and started cutting the pieces then gluing them together and created my first two ships within about 2-3 hours next to doing some other things.

The raw ships where then primed an painted - all the details and textures I tried to add are brushwork
In the end, I held two Genoese Galleys in my hands, and I´m definitely going to build more ships using the same techniques!

I already got the raw body of a smaller Galiot on my desk to add some scouting and screening capabilities to my small task force.  Then I need to decide which enemy would be suitable.  Ottoman are the obvious choice, but I consider doing some berber ships, maybe from Algeria or Tunisia instead.  Nothing is settled yet.

And don´t ask me why I chose Genoa. The flag appealed to me...
